as promised I did my best to do a scientific(???) side by side evaluation. small private pond on sat. mostly smallish gills, identical jigs, identical line, action, even same 10 inch hole. preliminary results are........drum roll please........same amount of fish on mousies as the gulp however the gulp did produce consistantly larger fish. several times I had hits on both lines in the same hole at the same time and the baits were within 8 inches of each other at all times so they had a choice. the bigger gills chose the gulp! downside is the hits were quicker and you had to be fast on the trigger or you missed them. the fish seemed to carry the live mousie a lot longer..... special note.. had 2 nice bass grab the gulp. 1 sample does not a true comparison make. I just have to convince the wife that I have to fish alot more.... strictly in the name of science you understand... tight lines all

I would be curious how this test would do on educated fish. Like Lackawanna or Carey. I would think that fish in a private pond, will mouth just about anything that is solid and suspended in the water column. Especially, if it had a little scent going on. Who knows maybe I am wrong! I have seen days where gulp really did out-produce live bait by outstanding numbers(Presque Isle Bay). I have also actually watched fish inhale a gulp minnow and spit it out just as fast as they sucked it in(Winola).
Keep us updated on your findings. |

I live near LSP but I'm not big on crowds and it seems everybody with a jig rod is out there but you are 100% right, I've seen the gills there more leader shy and fly selective than most trout. when a 4 inch fish inspects and snubs a wet fly......they are either very well fed or very well educated. clearly there must be more research, more trips, more locations, a wider variety of conditions. I wonder if I can get a grant for this kind of qualitative analysis?

I have had good sucess fishing artificals on well educated fish at lakes like LSP, Lake Jean, and Frances Slocum. I do fish some gulp but my favorites are Little Atom plastics and I like to fish those on fiskas jigs. A good example I was fishing a tournament this past weekend up at beechwood in tioga county and my partner who does not fish plastics had a school of suspened crappies move in and he fishes a double rig with a minnow on top and a jig and waxie on the bottom he couldn't get a bite so i went over and dropped down my jig tipped with a little atom plastic and was able to catch 3 fish before the school moved on. Another peice of advice I can give when fishing artificals is IT'S ALL IN HOW YOU MAKE IT DANCE.

hey Moose , thanks for the generous donation to my cause. now the first of those dozen predrilled holes I would like is on Lake Carey saturday about 1P.M. located directly over a school of 12 - 14 inch perch. The second hole you can put over the dead zone ( I'll let my fishin partner use that one) and the third you can put over some 20" walleyes. thanks again

update on gulp vs. bait. sat p.m. 10" hole, 2 rods 8" apart, same jig, worked both rods with one hand so action was identical. again the gulp was even with bait, difference being fish seemed to hit the gulp harded but held onto bait longer. I still don't have the confidence to give up bait but don't think I would starve if I only had gulp to fish with.
